Questions and Answer

Q. My first doctor visit is in one week. I found out I was pregnant just 2 weeks ago. I am probably only 4 or 5 weeks pregnant. Is it normal to have bleeding during this time?

A. I would have to advise calling your doctor immediately. Until you get a hold of his office I would put up my feet and rest. It may be a cervical infection (treatable with antibiotics), a threatened miscarriage, or a relatively normal drop in progesterone at this time that can cause some slight bleeding. You will probably be instructed to rest in bed until the bleeding stops. He will likely also order an ultrasound to determine the source of the bleeding. Many women have slight bleeding early on and go on to carry healthy babies to term. But it is something you need to have checked, please do not attempt to wait this out at home.
