Ask A Childbirth Educator Questions and Answer
Q.
What can pregnant women use to help prevent and relieve stretch marks?
A.
Stretch marks are often hereditary. Because of that most women find that
there is very little that can be done to prevent them. There are some things
you can do to help minimize them. One is eat a healthy diet rich in protein
and vitamins C and E. These nutrients help your skin stay flexible. Another is
rubbing olive oil or vitamin E cream on your belly, breasts and thighs. There
are also various "belly creams" available. This won't prevent a stretch mark
from happening if it is going to happen, but it helps minimize dryness and
maintain skin elasticity.
While your stretch marks can look pretty dark while pregnant, they do fade
after the birth. Often they become nearly invisible unless the light hits them
just right. One thing is certain, having a baby will change your body. Stretch
marks is only one of the ways. Some say to think of them as "badges of
motherhood". The remains of your stretch marks are a physical reminder of
your passage into motherhood. This is not a bad thing, just a sign that you
have moved into a new phase into your life.
