Ask A Lactation Consultant

Q. What is the maximim dosage of prozac while nursing? My daughter is 11 months old and the pediatrician says to stop at 40 mg., but that isn't helping the anxiety attacks and mood swings, though the depression is gone. Is there another medication that I could try? By the way, I don't practice birth control, other than lactation, which works fine, so I need something that is safe during pregnancy as well. Any suggestions would be great, my pediatrician is out of suggestions. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Kathy

A.Dear Kathy,

I am not sure what dosage of prozac is appropriate for you in your situation. I am not a physician and I don't know your history. I do know that there are other medictions that work similar to prozac that are compatible to take while breastfeeding. Talk with your care provider and tell him or her your feelings about all of these things with him or her. There are other options.
