Ask A Lactation Consultant

Q. Do you advise breastfeeding women to avoid shellfish or oysters?

A.I am not aware of any complications from eating oysters or shellfsh unless there is a family history of allergies to these foods. If you are unsure if there is, it may be best to avoid them. Shellfish allergies can be severe, but if you've had them already while breastfeeding, it's probably OK to keep eating them.
