Ask A Lactation Consultant

Q. I am expecting my first baby in the next few weeks and I would like to breastfeed, but I've heard so many horror stories from my friends and family. What do I need to know to get off to a good start?

A. Congratulations on your upcoming birth. It's great that you would like to breastfeed! The best information I can give you is to get in touch with a Lactation Consultant in your area and your local LaLeche League. Both have a lot of information they can share with you about breastfeeding. You can find a Lactation Consultant in your area by talking with your health care provider and his or her staff or checking with local hospitals. Laeche League has a web site with a lot of great information as well as listings for groups in your area. Your very best teacher for breastfeeding is the baby that you carry. After he or she is born put the baby to breast as soon as possible after birth and see what happens. Many babies can teach their mothers what breastfeeding is all about.
