Ask A Lactation Consultant
Q. I am curious to know as I have read conflicting and heard various
interpretations as to whether or not it is safe to continue to
breastfeed if you are pregnant? Wouldn't this lead to nipple
stimulation which causes contractions and as a result you would lose
the baby?? Please let me know. thank you so much.
Julie
A. Dear Julie,
You are exactly right, there are many theories out there about
breastfeeding while pregnant. A lot of women breastfeed through out
their pregnancies without complications, however if there is a history
of recurrent miscarriage or preterm labor, it may not be in the best
interest of the patient. If you are considering becoming pregnant while
breastfeeding, check in with you health care provider.
Stephanie Ryan, RN, BSN, ICCE, IBCLC answers your breastfeeding questions.
