Ask A Lactation Consultant
Q. I have flat nipples. I have read that it is good to start wearing
breast sheilds before the baby is here is that true?
A. The product you may be looking for is called a breast shell. They are
worn in your bra prior to babies' arrival and for the first feww days or
weeks of breast feeding. They can help to make the nipple more
prominent for the baby to latch onto. Once baby starts nursing, he or
she will pull the nipple out as she nurses and the shells help to keep
the nipple out between feeding. If there is any history of preterm
labor, shells may not be an option. You may want to check out
www.medela.com for information about where to get breast shells in your
area. Make sure you ask your health care provider as well.
Many babies do very well with flat nipples with or without shells.
