Q. How soon is it safe to get pregnant after a cesarean birth?

A. Your body needs to heal well, and you need to learn how to care for your baby. You also need to replenish the stores within your body so that the second pregnancy will be healthy. If your babies are too close together, sometimes the second baby isn't as well nourished, and you are more exhausted, caring for a pregnancy and a toddler. So, two to three years is a nice time frame. Discuss this with your Health Care Provider also.

Pat Sonnenstuhl is a semi-retired nurse midwife with over 30 years of experience in health care (first as an RN, then as an ARNP, CNM). She has experience with hospital nursing/midwifery and home and birth center midwifery.
