Questions and Answers

Q. I am newly pregnant and very excited. I can't wait to wear maternity clothes and everything else. The one problem I've been having is horrible morning sickness. It happens at two main times of the day, early morning and early evening. What can I do to help this?

A. First of all, congratulations on your pregnancy! Morning sickness is a fairly common aspect of pregnancy and probably one of the hardest to deal with. The first thing to try would be all of the changes in your eating habits:

  • Eat small, frequent meals
  • Eat some crackers as soon as you get up in the morning
  • Avoid foods that make you ill, particularly hot, spicy, or greasy foods
  • Eat something high protein before bed
  • Always carry a snack with you during the day, something good for you

Here are some other things that help, remember to get out of bed slowly, drink plenty of fluids, and get fresh air. Another thing that has helped a lot of women are sea bands. They are non-medicinal braclets that hit acupressure points in your wrists, which supposedly stop nausea and vomiting. Hang in there, morning sickness usually goes away around the end of the third month.
