Q. I was told my unborn child was in breech position at 5 months... I am now seven months and wonder if she will turn around in time for birth?

A. The chances that your baby has already turned are great. About 96% of babies are head down by 37 weeks and ready for birth. If your baby is one of the 4% who does not turn you have several options:

  • Tilt Exercises to help encourage the baby to turn.
  • Playing music or talking to the baby at the pubic bone.
  • Trying what is called an external version, moving the baby head down from the outside (done by your practitioner).
  • If you meet certain criteria the American College of OB/GYNs says that you should attempt a vaginal breech birth.
  • Discuss alternative delivery methods with your practitioner.

Many people will tell you that babies don't turn after so long, and especially if they are big. I had a woman who wrote me a few weeks ago saying that her 11.5 pound baby turned 8 hours before birth at 41 weeks gestation. There is always a chance your baby will turn...
