Ask A Nurse
Questions and Answers

Q. My wife is 3 days over term, she doesn't wish to be induced. Is there any other ways of getting started?

A. If they are talking about inducing her now, you might want to ask why. Are they just being impatient or is there a health reason? As for home induction, they will all depend on if your body is ready. I would definitely say stick with the methods such as walking, sexual intercourse, orgasms, visualizations, nipple stimulation, etc. Avoid things like castor oil, despite what others might tell you. This can actually lead to problems like dehydration, meconium staining (baby passing first bowel movement), and is quite unpleasant. Ask your practitioner what ideas they may have for getting things started without medical means. In general, just remember babies come when they are good and ready and not a moment before...
