Ask A Nurse
Questions and Answers

Q. Should I be worried about the pains I've been experiencing in my side? It feels like a cramp and extends down into my lower back and abdomen. I'm 21 weeks pregnant and a little worried. My baby's activity has not changed since I've been experiencing the pain.

A. Sounds like round ligament pain. This is a normal pain of pregnancy, caused by the growth of the uertus and the stress placed on the round ligaments. Sometimes this can abe a sharp pain noticed when you move too suddenly or when getting up or down. Mention it to your practitioner at your next visit, or sooner if it becomes worse, fails to go away or the baby's movements changes drastically.
