How to be a Breastfeeding Advocate

  • Avoid sending mixed messages. Be clear in your support of breastfeeding.
  • Be realistic about breastfeeding problems, but be encouraging. Problems can occur, but you can let your class members know that you can help them avoid or resolve problems if they do occur.
  • Know what your handouts are selling besides breastfeeding.
  • Turn down offers to distribute "formula" samples to the participants in your class. You are not helping the lactating mother by implying, through distrobution of samples, that she will need to use manufactered milk after her baby's birth.
