Pain Relief for Episiotomies and Tears

If you have an episiotomy, extensions, or tearing, you may want to try some of the following to help ease the pain.

  • Cold Packs to the perineum. This can be done at first with special maxi pads that have cold packs built in.
  • Sitz baths. These can be portable things that you place over a toilet to let warm water cover the wound, or it can be a large tub at the hospital or birth center. You can replicate this at home by filling your tub only a few inches with warm water. You can also add different herbs to help soothe.
  • Peri care. This means that you wash with a squirt bottle as opposed to wiping. Patting dry is also better than wiping.
  • Using medications such as Tucks® has been recommended, however, you can make your own with witch hazel and pads.
  • When resuming intercourse, it may be advisable to use a personal lubricant, such as KY Jelly®.
