Childbirth Educators from ICEA

Didn't look any farther than ICEA, because their philosophy totally meshed with mine, and I felt that they would allow me the most freedom in teaching what I believe rather than the party line.

I chose to be certified to be more credible to my students and to the medical community. Also, I believe it will help me be reimbursed by Medicaid.

The only support I have had is that which I have found elsewhere - not from the home office, but from some others either certified or studying to be certified by ICEA. I wish I had had more support, with a study partner, etc. This is done in other areas, but not here.

I have attended the Basic workshop for beginning educators, and the Advanced workshop for those already teachin. I enjoyed them thoroughly, and learned more than I ever thought I needed to know. I have not enjoyed the home-study part as much, but that is due to my own lack of self-discipline.

I would have liked to have been linked with a "mentor" or someone like that to help encourage me, and to help me know more what to do. I have been totally on my own as far as developing curriculum for my classes - lesson plans and handouts. I taught for a year before this was ever reviewed by anyone. I know I wasn't teaching anything "wrong", but could've done better with an evaluator sooner in my career.
