Mitchell
It was my second pregnancy and everything was going fantastic. This time I
had morning sickness, though and a two year old to keep me busy. I decided
I would go with a midwife instead of a OB Doctor. During the 7th month
they noted that the baby was in a frank breech position (bottom first with
legs bent up toward head), but was not concerned because there was still
plenty of time and room for the baby to turn. The baby never turned. The
midwife needed to transfered me to the doctor in the office and we
scheduled a version to try to manually turn the baby. That morning my
husband and I went to the hospital early and was put into a labor room.
The nurse administered a drug to keep my uterus soft and twenty minutes
later the doctor arrived to try to turn the baby. I have to admit I was
very nervous. I was hooked up to the monitors to keep track of the baby's
heartrate. The doctor just put his hands on my stomache and started
pushing and squeezing to move the baby. The doctor apologized before hand
saying that it was going to hurt - having to wrench on my stomache. One of
the nurses said "You can hold on to my hand if you need to" and the doctor
said "Are you talking to me?" Ha. It wasn't that bad - but nothing
happened. The version didn't work. So I had to return home with the baby
still in the breech position. My doctor said I needed to think about
scheduling a c-section or having the baby vaginally. He was the only
doctor in town who is practiced and willing to deliver babies in the breech
position - as long as they weren't footling breech (feet or 1 foot first).
I believed that God allowed me to find the only doctor in town that
delivered breech to be my doctor when I just happened to have a baby
breech.
Two weeks left until my due date. At my check up the doctor said he was
going on vacation the week I
was due. I decided to schedule to be induced the Monday of the week he was
leaving and deliver vaginally.
The big day arrived. My husband and I arrived at the hospital early 6:45
a.m. The labor department was so busy and there weren't any available
rooms when I arrived. We had to wait in the waiting room to see what was
going to happen. I didn't know if I should cry or be relieved. I wasn't
sure I was going to have the baby after all that day. Then a nurse came in
and got me and directed me to an overflow room. Soon after the doctor came
in and broke my water (I was already dialated to 1cm on my own). At 8:30
a.m. they had me walk down the hall to another labor & delivery room and
started me on a pitocin drip i.v. This speeded my labor up but I was still
fairly comfortable. By the time I was dialated to 4 c.m. I asked for an
epidural. This was so great!!!!! Since it was a breech delivery I had to
deliver in the operating room just incase I needed an emergency C-section.
At 1:00 p.m. they wheeled me in and my labor nurse was so funny she kept me
laughing and the doctor told us to get serious - this was a serious
situation getting the baby out and we needed to concentrate on pushing. By
1:27 p.m. the baby was born - perfectly healthy and butt first.
We were so happy. It was a little weird knowing it was a little boy even
before we were able to see what he looked like. He had a perfectly shaped
head - but his little bottom was all black and blue from the pushing.
He was gorgeous!!! God gave us a beautiful gift in Mitchell.
