Andrew Louis Hiskes
Having my son was the greatest thing I have ever done. I was 22 years old
when I had him. His due date was September 9, 1995.
On September 4, 1995 my husband had a soft-ball game. I went and sat on the
bench with some friends. One of my friends, Kelli, was telling a story
about a man staring at her breast. I laughed so hard that I had a
contraction. Well I didn't think anything of it.
When the game was over a friend of my husbands asked when I was going to
have the baby. I told him that I was due in 5 days.
On September 5, 1995 at about 3:00 am I woke up in a little pain. Then the
pain became big. I couldn't sleep. I would crawl up and down the stairs of
my home. About 2 hours latter my husband couldn't take any more. He made me
go to the hospital. I didn't want to. I kept telling him that I wasn't in
labor. I think I was just scared.
We got there at 6:00 am. The nurse looked at me and asked how far I was
dialated at my last doctors appt. I was only a 1 a week before, but at the
hospital I was a 5. She told me that I wouldn't be going home. So I called
my parents and told them to get there fast. They lived 2 hours away.
The doctor came in at 8:15 am and gave me a epidural. My parents finally
made it there at about 10:00 am. Right before they got there the doctor
broke my water. All I kept saying was I wanted the baby born before my
soaps came on. The doctor came in at 12:00 pm and said it was time to start
pushing.
My mom and husband stayed in the labor room with me. I also had 2 student
nurses watching. I didn't scream, but I was tired. My husband heled me up
with one hand and let me squeeze the other. He was wonderful. All I rember
saying is "go tell my daddy that I am fine." I said it over and over. Then
at the end I said "I am so tired. I can't do it any more."
Andrew Louis Hiskes was born at 1:09 pm during All My Children. He weighed
8 lbs and 10 oz and was 21 in long. He had a head full of black hair, which
he never lost. And now we are hoping to give him a baby sister or brother
in the next year.
