Kylee's Birth

baby foot pink

My husband and I were visiting my parents in Reno, Nv, we live in Orem, Utah. I was 26 weeks pregnant. One night I started to have some very disturbing groin pains that I thought were just gas. We didn't want to take any chances, so off to the Emergency room we went. I told the triage nurse that I was pregnant and thought I was having strong gas pains. She sent us up to labor and delivery.

Up in L&D I was hooked up to a fetal monitor and given an ultrasound and told that my placenta was ruptured and I had a blood clot. They told us that they would have to do an emergency c-section immediately. The babies chances were very small. About 40% chance of survival. We were so scared and overwhelmed. We went in for the c-section and Kylee was born. She weighed 1 pound 3 ounces and was whisked right off to NICU.

She was doing so well those first 2 weeks aside from an open PDA which was resolved after 2 treatments of indocin, when all of the sudden her abdomen became very swollen and blue! The doctors told us that they thought she may have NEC (necrotinizing entrocolits). They would have to do surgery immediately. The doctors told us that she was a very sick little girl and she may not survive. They gave us the bleakest of outcomes. Before surgery, the nurses ask if we wanted to have some clergy come in and read her her last rites. We had 2 elders come in and bless her. While they were blessing her, I had my pinky in her tiny hand. She was just laying there very still, aside from her shaking belly from the oselator. As the elder said his blessing "Bless you parents that they will be strong for you" she squeezed my finger! Then he said "bless you tiny sole and body that you be strong through this operation" and she squeezed my finger again! All of the sudden I felt this warm feeling around me like someone had put their arms around us and gave us a big hug. I took this as a sign from her and God that she would be o.k.

We went down to surgery and the doctors told us that it would be at least 1-3 hours. After 45 minutes, the surgeon came out and said its a miracle! She does not have NEC. Her intestines look very good, in fact. We asked what was wrong with her then? They did not know. But she did not NEC and that was life saving.

Two days later a nurse noticed some fluid leaking out of her ear and called an ear doctor to look at it. She had an ear infection and after the ear doctor lanced her eardrums, she was rapidly progressing and her platlets went up from 50,000 to 102,000.

Kylee is now 8 months old and 10 pounds. It was a long 4 months for my husband and I. He would have to fly back and forth to Reno from Utah. She is truly our little miracle.
